The Most Important Friend Request
In a time where we are sending or replying to friend requests in different social media outlets, we should never forget that the most important person we should friend is ourselves.
Long before I was ever in network marketing, my really good friend, Dan, was really getting on me about being too hard on myself. At the time, I was really into fiction writing and I kept telling myself the stuff I was writing was really terrible stuff.
The conversation with my friend went something like this:
Dan: You go to writing groups every week, right?
Dan: When someone is done reading something have you ever told them that it was really terrible?
Dan: Why not?
Me: Because that’s not cool, not real supportive either.
Dan: Then don’t say that about yourself and your writing. You’re a person, too. Be your friend, dude.
Is the saying “Be Your Own Best Friend” a Cliche?
Apparently I was sounding like a fool from his perspective. But this was a real casual conversation that turned into a something I never forgot to this day. I know it sounds cliche to say “Be Your Own Best Friend”, but there is a reason why it’s a cliche, right? Give yourself support and pat yourself on the back when you do something well.
We should never be so critical that we actually are attacking ourselves personally. This will get us nowhere and it will create the wrong kind of momentum.
With everything you do in your personal or business life, create the right kind of momentum. Don’t be too hard on yourself and learn to give yourself credit where credit is due. At least you are trying!
